Jan Carey arrived in Hibbing in 1975 for a student teaching assignment at Hibbing High School. Seven years later, in 1982, she was hired by Hibbing Community College as its librarian.

With career, family and post-graduate degrees completed it was time for change; Jan needed to reunite with her creative, artistic side. Jan began taking workshops and college courses by local professional artists. She began experimenting with watercolors, oils, and pastels. Jan has attended workshops and studied with professional artists – Tom Lynch, David R. Becker, Bob Burridge, Frank Webb, Sterling Edwards, and Tony Couch.

“It inspires me to take time to watch sunsets, observe a stormy sky, listen to waves lapping on a shore, or hear the rustle of fallen leaves. Since beginning my artistic path, I’ve learned to see and experience nature differently. I take more time to watch, see, observe and listen. Things in nature perform a colorful, wonderful dance. It is a dance that takes my eye to the brush to the paper.”
