Samson’s Gift | Ellen Diederich

MacRostie Gallery | On view through December.

This exhibit showcases the paintings behind the book Samson’s Gift, written and illustrated by Ellen Diederich. Samson’s Gift tells the story of a lamb whose wool puts him in good standing with the “new baby king.” Diederich’s rough textured, neo-impressionist style paintings blend watercolors and acrylics in softly lit tones, creating an idyllic setting with a holiday theme and colorful animal imagery.

Ellen Jean Diederich grew up on a farm in Staples, Minn., and went to college at Minnesota State University Moorhead where she earned a BFA in Fine Art and a BA in Art Education. She worked as an elementary art teacher before becoming a professional artist in 1985. Working primarily as a watercolorist, her passion for painting came long before her recognition as an award winning artist. Ellen draws inspiration for her paintings from her farm experiences, hometown and travels. She enjoys painting animals, flowers and architecture. Now living in Fargo, North Dakota, she owns Givinity Press, under which she publishes her glicee reproductions, note cards, Christmas cards and books.

December classes by exhibiting artist, Ellen Diederich:

Using Colorful Darks to Create Powerful Paintings

High contrast in values is one of the most effective ways to make your paintings eye catching. The trouble is students, and even professional artists, often feel nervous about placing a strong dark into their painting. Often times a strong dark can muddy your color palette or be used incorrectly and make your piece seem off, further validating the tendency to avoid dark values. Yet often times at a juried exhibition the paintings with a strong value range are the award winners. This workshop focuses on coordinating color dominance and effective value contrast to increase your success.
