MacRostie Gallery | On view through November.
Is Not Gold is an installation of two- and three-dimensional works that survey the contrast of structured and organic forms in a suburban neighborhood with imagery collected throughout a summer of kayaking and drawing trips. Inspired by the idea of comfort within the repetition of a cookie cutter neighborhood along with the spectacle of suburban environments, Lyz Wendland’s work comments on her surroundings as she explores her community, employing drawing, painting, and mixed media. Wendland’s kayak/drawing project was made possible with funds through a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant.
LyzWendland received her MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and her BFA in Drawing, Painting and Art History from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Her work has been exhibited nationally in galleries such as the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, ND and The Berkeley Art Center in Berkeley, CA. In 2009, Lyz was the recipient of a Jerome Fiber Grant and is a 2016 recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant. She has been the recipient of two “Excellence in Teaching and Learning” grants from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, where she currently teaches. During the 2015-2016 academic year, Lyz also represented UW – River Falls as a selected Wisconsin Teaching Fellow where she researched effective critique strategies in her advanced drawing courses.
