MacRostie Art Center is pleased to announce that it will host a jazz cabaret featuring musicians Sam Miltich and Dave Karr on Thursday, October 24 at 7 pm at MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids, MN. MacRostie Art Center (MAC) is a nonprofit art center dedicated to community growth through the arts in northern Minnesota. The
organization presents monthly art exhibitions, offers classes for youth and adults, and is home to an art shop featuring the work of many talented local and regional artists – including local musicians.
Since the fall of 2011, the MAC has presented a series of concerts featuring Minnesota-based musicians such as Peter Ostroushko, guitarist Joan Griffith, and cellist Martha Larson. Now, the MAC is pleased to welcome saxophone legend Dave Karr to the stage in a duo performance with local jazz guitarist Sam Miltich. For over sixty years, musician and composer Dave Karr has been performing with many of the best national and Twin Cities-based jazzartists. He grew up in New York City and got the bug hearing great jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Karr moved to the Twin Cities in his twenties, and has long established himself as one of the best-loved characters in the jazz scene.
“Whether he’s in the orchestra of a touring Broadway hit, providing flourishes to the shows of top Twin Cities singers, leading his Gerry Mulligan tribute band on baritone sax or fronting his own quartet, Karr is a standout. Everybody, I mean everybody, digs Dave,” says St. Paul’s Artists’ Quarter.
The jazz cabaret at MacRostie Art Center will be a reunion of sorts for Miltich and Karr who first met at a reception at MacRostie Art Center in 2003. They began playing together in 2007 and released an album of duets entitled Darn that Dream in 2009. While more than fifty years separate them in age, the two were drawn together by their love of music – in particular that of saxophonist Lester Young, whom both cite as a major musical influence.
The gallery at MacRostie Art Center is a new setting for the concert series, as MAC’s Executive Director Katie Marshall explains. “When we considered the style of music in this performance, we felt that a traditional concert venue wasn’t the right fit for the atmosphere these two musicians bring to the table,” states Marshall. “If you close your eyes and listen to Sam and Dave playing together you can almost hear the glasses clinking and see the candles flickering.”
The MAC will transform its gallery space for the event to create the ambiance of a jazz club. The evening will feature the music of Miltich and Karr and will also include light hors d’oeuvres, wine provided by Pokegama Plaza Liquor, and a silent auction of local and regional art. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door and available at MacRostie Art Center, 405 NW 1st Ave, downtown Grand Rapids. Proceeds benefit the programs of MacRostie Art Center, and the event is generously sponsored by Broberg & Ferraro CPAs, the Doctors at Lakewood Surgery Center, and Pokegama Plaza Liquor.
