Every day in communities across Greater Minnesota, veterans struggle to maintain their stability, safety, and dignity under extraordinarily difficult living conditions. The deeply moving images presented in Portraits of Home II reveal the challenging circumstances faced by these men and women and their families who are struggling to persevere. Presented by the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund.

Hirst intiates his work with ideas envoking fragmentation, spirituality, and the act of building/construction. He doesn't set out to pain images, but rather build/disassemble/rebuild until a final image is realized. His paintings are encaustic (wax & oil paint) on canvas. Carl Johnson: mixed media
Johnson produces pieces - "fabrications" - from a great variety of common objects such as drawer pulls, rusty wire and metal, beads, pieces of old leather jackets and felt weather stripping. Johnson finds the synergies and relationships created by combinations of these objects both exciting and intriguing. He lives and works in Crystal, MN.

Grevich is a self-taught artist who decided to pursue her passion of painting after working in the real estate business for ten years. Grevich's work focuses on her motivators in life; the human figure, the emotion of a portrait, animals, and nature. She lives and works in Hamel, MN.
After working in the corporate world for many years, LaBeau decided to trade the comfort of her career for her aspirations to be an artist. Her work focuses on capturing the beauty of nature rather than replicate it. She lives and works in Grand Rapids, MN.

Pete Schulte: graphite drawings
Schulte's works on paper are highly influenced by music, what he calls his "fuel". He focuses on light and draws from his own experiences to create small-scale graphite drawings. He has been active in the regional arts scene for the past twelve years, helping to found both the Figge Art Museum Art Advisory Council and the Kanga Arts Cooperative, both of Davenport, IA. He lives and works in Iowa City, IA.

This exhibit, "Prophets and Revolutionaries", examines the lives of historic and modern day visionaries that shape and define our culture, technology, and politics. This piece grew from an interest in the role of prayer cards, sports cards, and tarot decks in the veneration of heroes and ideals such as bravery, righteousness, freedom and democracy. Daryn Lowman: ceramics
Lowman is a ceramicist and an Art Instructor at Hibbing Community College in Hibbing, MN. His intention for this show is to "bring together works that display the transitions of flux as a material and as a connection to daily life. The word flux satisfies my nature and definition of how daily life contains a continous flow of change and movement." Works in the exhibition will be both functional and non-fucntional soda-fired ceramics.

Klueg works to make smart art pottery that could only be made in the present, and that has at least something to say on various levels to diverse visual audiences. Klueg incorporates text and imagery into his ceramic vessels. He is currently the a Professor/Ceramics Area Head at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Todd Voss: painting
Voss' painting process begins with outdoor observations and the study of nature, often taking "notes" with his camera. In the studio, he uses memory, photos, and instinct to guide his quick and direct method of painting. He creates enduring images that express the preciousness of nature, but also connect us with something greater than ourselves. He lives and works in Hovland, MN.

Coming Out
This exhibition will be organized in collaboration with OutFront Minnesota, the State's GLBT Online Community Center. OutFront Minnesota's mission is to make our state a place where GLBT Minnesotans have the freedom, power, and confidence to make the best choices for their own lives. This exhibition will request submissions from artists throughout Minnesota and it will be juried by representatives from MacRostie Art Center and OutFront Minnesota. Thematically, the subject matter of the work will surround 'coming out' and the reception for this exhibition will coincide with National Coming Out Day.

Ben Moore: drawing & painting
Moore's work focuses on the materials, graphite and paper, rather than the finished image. His drawings begin as non-objective approaches, reacting to the form as it comes. The finished drawings are accumulations of marks, sometimes resembling smoke, storm clouds, and explosions.

Bill Gossman: Pottery
Gossman, a potter from New London, MN, specializes in wood and soda firing. He works primarily on the wheel and alters the forms following the initial throwing with painting and carving. Gossman strives for simplicity in his work and achieves this through his masterful use of form and color.

All From One Tree: A traveling exhibition by the North House Folk School
This is a project that draws attention to the source material of many northern craftspeople--the birch tree. One birch tree was harvested and more than 20 craftspeople found inspiration and harvested materials from this single tree. Items in the exhibition include wood turned bowls, canoe paddles, birch dyed silk scarves, figure carvings, and baskets.

2009 Empty Bowls Project
Friday, March 6, 11 am to 2 pm
$10 (includes handmade bowl, soup, bread, and beverage)
For the eighth year, the Empty Bowls Project will bring the community together in a fundraiser to increase awareness about the problem of hunger and raise funds to support hunger relief agencies in Itasca County. Proceeds from the project are given to the Community Cafe, Second Harvest North Central Food Bank, and MacRostie Art Center.

For Lowman, form and utility are essential elements, and the functional aspects of his pieces are often implied gestures that create the illusion of utility.

Loso is interested in surface decoration, metallic additions, and carving in his raku, stoneware, and porcelain pieces.

Swann is working to unite image and form within his functional and decorative stoneware pieces.

Printmaking: Diana Behl, Tracy Otten, and Eric Johnson
Diana Behl
Behl's current body of work often assumes characteristics of a diary or logbook, referencing memory and narrative. Personal iconography alludes to metaphor and humor, while the physical accumulation of collaged material and amassment of drawn marks suggest reflection on these themes. Behl uses intaglio, monoprint, silkscreen, collage, and drawing in her work. She lives and works in Brookings, SD.
Tracy Otten
Otten's work incorporates traditional printmaking processes and experimentation and explores the ideas of individuality, social mores, and prosperity. The use of symbols throughout the work reflects how society influences identity development in relation to societal expectations. Symbols commonly used are teacups, handkerchiefs, fish, tally marks, and ovoid forms. Otten lives and works in Morris, MN.
Eric Johnson
Johnson's current body of work deals with landscape, focusing on trees as the primary subject. Johnson says of trees, "they were magical, the tallest thing a boy could see from a part of the world that is almost completely flat, giants in an otherwise ordinary world." Johnson works primarily with the reduction method of relief printmaking. He lives and works near Fargo, ND.

Cox's current conceptual and philosophical explorations have dealt with and are dealing with his place as a new father and the many themes of heroism, androgyny, gender status quos, and conformity. Cox is influenced by scientific journaling, graffiti, graphic novels, schematics, and diagrams.
